Uninstall and remove MSN messenger

It’s not that difficult to remove the pesky little pile-on of a software: MSN Messenger!

Let us keep it simple. First, make sure you have exited MSN messenger and unsinstalled any MSN Messenger related entry from Control Panel (START –> CONTROL PANEL –> ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS).

Then, START –> RUN the following command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Done. That should remove it. If it doesn’t, check some more round-about and cumbersome ways from Microsoft that involve the Windows registry.

Addendum: Delete stored accounts

[Thanks to user "Jojje" below, comment #61] How to delete all the email addresses (.Net passport accounts) stored in MSN messenger login

. This can be very simply achieved by doing the following:

(1) In Start –> Run, enter:

control userpasswords2

(2) In the “Advanced Tab” look for “Manage Passwords”, which takes care of all the .Net passport passwords on your machine. You can also change the setting to not save any from this point on. Read this useful comment below (August 2005) for a solution that also works.

Addendum 2: Disabled password storage

To disable the storage of these passwords altogether, follow the handy instructions here: WinGuides instructions.

Addendum 3: Sign-in Error 800b0001

[Thanks to Jessica below, comment #185] If you’re getting the pesky “Signing into MSN messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later 800b0001″ error, then follow these steps:

Open start menu and click RUN. Then individually type in the codes below and press Enter:

regsvr32 Softpub.dll

regsvr32 Mssip32.dl

regsvr32 Initpki.dll [may take ~30 seconds, don't worry]

After executing these commands one by one, it should work.

Addendum 4: Sign-in Error 80072ee7

This is usually because of a firewall preventing your MSN from connecting to the Internet, even before sign-on process begins. Make sure your firewall (Zone Alarm, Norton anti-virus package, etc) are allowing MSN Messenger.

  14. Lynzie says:

sorry, we are unable to sign in please try later. we see error 80072ee7 with MSN login. just keeps coming up wen i try to sign in on msn 7, so plz can some one help, me so i can get on msn.

  15. sniptools says:

    Hi Lynzie,

Try reducing the length of your password to 8 characters. Version 7.0 of Messenger is driving people nuts because of this, it’s undocumented by Microsoft but it has been known to work.

Meanwhile, I recommend you use Trillian, it imports all your MSN users without any trouble and it a bit less painful to use and upgrade.

    Shanx

  16. sniptools says:

Also take a look at this MSN troubleshooter, the same error could also be due to firewall.

  17. saromi says:

  20. tammam says:

im having a somehwat similar problem
my msn has uninstalled itself (just like my printer.. :s, but i wont get into that….just yet)
so i tried to reinstall it but the installation for 7.0.0777 or somtin, needs the file “msnmsgs.msi” (installation for 6.2, no other ones work) i have looked forever for that on the itnernet so if u hav it for windows 98/me, please send it to me at
    tammam.nima@gmail.com
    thx

  21. TITAN says:

In order to solve the uninstall problem with emoticons plus sw you have to do:
1.- Uninstall sw using the remove exec of the emoticons plus site
2.- reboot in safe mode and delete 2 programs:
    c:\windows\winappm.exe
    c:\windows\msmapps.exe
3.- Run Ad Adware SE plus to detect critical and negligible file and delete all.
I think with that the problem is solved. If not you have to do the same but also edit the windows registry:
    1.-Start
    2.-Run
    3.-Regedit
and delete all the microidea folder you find under windows or software folders.

  22. insane emoticons says:

cheers for that il try it i hope this works! stupid thing its so annoying

  23. Ellen says:

Does anyone know where to find this “remove exec” on the crappy site of emoticons plus, cuz I can’t seem to find it …

    SOS!!!! ;o)

  24. sniptools says:

i cant get into the msn messenger but when i had messenger 6.2 everything was ok now
    says to me
i cant get into msn messenger try later .80072ee7
    why?

  27. sniptools says:

Manolis, is the exact error message this one:

    —-
Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service at this time. Please try again later. 80072ee7
    —-

I guess this is mostly because your firewall does not allow MSN Messenger to access the Internet. If you have installed a new version of MSN Messenger, then make sure MSN Messenger is allowed access in your firewall rules.

Alternatively, check up if their a “proxy server” enabled in MSN Messenger and you do not use one. To remove the proxy settings, click the “Tools” menu and then “Options…” at your MSN Messenger main window. Then in the options screen click “Connection” in the list to the left. Next, click the “Advanced Settings…” button. You can try and uncheck all checkboxes in this screen to let MSN Messenger connect through a direct connection. If that does not work you can restore the settings again by checking the boxes you unchecked before.

    HTH,
    Shashank

  28. Herman Scheele says:

However, this page should be deleted since it doesn’t deal with MSN Messenger, I wanted to delete MSN, I REPEAT: MSN Messenger, and now I deleted Windows, I REPEAT: Windows Messenger.

Is there any way of deleting MSN Messenger 7?

  29. sniptools says:

Herman, the entire page, if you read carefully, talks about MSN messenger. Starting from the very unequivocal title.

  30. Ankur says:

The above command worked for me. It removed my MSN messenger.

A user should easily be able to uninstall an application program without having to rely solely on internet message boards. This makes me HATE Microsoft.

  31. Courtney says:

    hey,
ive downloaded msn messenger 7.0 but my comp wont let me use it, keeps saying error 8007012e service is unavailable blah blah blah. There is nothing wrong with my internet connection. I think it may be because my comp is to old (ive got windows 98 and a Dell Latitude laptop…thats all i know!)ive tried getting msn 6.0 back but everytime i install it then go to sign in, it says i MUST upgrade to the newest version and gives me no option but to download msn 7.0. Does anybody know how to fix this, 6.0 was working fine before and i just want it back.
Please if anyone can help me out, it would be awesome

  32. Jessica says:

I have been trying to delete my msn explorer because msn messenger will not longer work and neither will msn explorer.. so I thought I would delete both and re-load the msn messenger only. They both used to work, but not they dont for some odd reason. When I try to “remove” msn explorer it doesnt show up when I go to add/remover programs.. what do I do?

  33. Mayhem says:

Go to ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS in CONTROL PANEL, then on the left hand side click on ADD REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS. That should have MSN Explorer and MSN Messenger listed, you can uninstall both.

  34. Jessica says:

okay… so I deleted both msn messenger and msn explorer and I re-installed it.. I’m getting an error that says “signing into MSN messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later 800b0001″ Its been like this for a while and I thought it was only temporarily unavailable, but I guess not. My internet is also working so it cant be my internet connection. heeellpppp!

  35. Jessica says:

sorry for crowding up this message board with my messages but after much research I finally got my msn to work!!!! so I will share it with everyone who has the same “signing into MSN messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later 800b0001″ error message
    _________

open start menu and click RUN. Then individually type in the codes below

    regsvr32 Softpub.dll

    regsvr32 Mssip32.dl

regsvr32 Initpki.dll (this one took about 30 seconds so dont worry)

After entering those individually it will work!!!

  36. dennis says:

i am using windows xp professional. how can i remove automatically sign in option from windows messenger?

  37. sniptools says:

    Courtney,

Try this. Uninstall MSN 7.0 or 6.0 *entirely* from ADD REMOVE Programs –> Add Remove Windows Components. Remove any folders your MSN may have created where your message logs are stored.

Run RegSeeker (http://snipurl.com/registry2 – this is a zip file of a VERY useful program) to clean up your registry. It’s fairly intuitive but let me know if you need help. PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION before doing anything with the registry.

Once you are certain that there’s no trace of MSN Messenger on your machine, try installing the 6.0 again.

My suggestion: forget about MSN Messenger altogether and use Trillian: http://www.trillian.cc/ – it also supports other messenger clients like Yahoo, AOL, ICQ in the same interface.

    Dennis,

Please read other messages on this page before cluttering up with additional questions that have already been asked before. You may want to look at your MSN’s Tools –> Options, or wherever the configuration is, there’s a very self-evident option for disabling auto sign in at startup.

  38. scott says:

hey i cant sign into my msn. it tells me on one that i am not connected to the internet but i know i am and the other says error 80072ee7. any help would be nice.

  39. sniptools says:

Scott, I’m guessing you’re using a firewall and MSN is not allowed to pass through. Please enable MSN to connect to the net and it should work. Also take a look at comment 166 above.

  40. Amy says:

Actually, Dennis asked a good question, cuz I went into the options and turned off auto signon, and the signon button with the email is still there, I don’t want just ANYONE to click it and get on my name… but it won’t go away no matter what options I disable….

  41. sniptools says:

Amy, Dennis, perhaps you can use intructions above to disable password storage altogether and see if that helps? Other than that, I recommend using Trillian or some such common interface to connect to MSN though I wonder if this is a useful suggestion.

  42. rocky says:

well I have the same problem and trevor (a big way up) has. But I didn’t hear the solution for it. I follow the intructions to go to the MANAGE PASSWORDS. And I see all the e-mails, but when I click on the DELETE button, nothing happens, they just don’t get away. How can I delete them?? PLEASE!

  43. lora says:

i seem to have a problem loging in my msn. it mostly says “sorry we can not log u in at this time please try again later”(and then some numbers) i don’t really know what to do can u help me?? well just e-mail me at: lorabalaag2@hotmail.com, thank you!! lora

  44. sniptools says:

Lora, did you see “Addendum 3″ in the article above? Please read before you post a comment.

  45. hannah says:

  47. Fiona says:

Thank you for your tool to remove msnmsgs.msi, I have found a whole new world!

  48. andrew says:

    Hi everybody,

    I have a problem.,
    I use windows XP
i would like to delete MSN Messenger user log on list. (Remove users that have at one time or an other used my computer to log on to MSN messenger.
I have tried what jojje said on 5 july 2004:

click the Start button -> click Run… -> type control userpasswords2 -> hit Enter or click OK -> click Advanced tab -> select Manage Passwords -> delete all Passport entries -> click OK/Apply.

But i can only highlight one password entry at a time ,and when i try to delete it ,it doesn,t do it!!!!!!
And there is no option to delete all passport entries.
has anybody got an answer to my problem as it is driving me nuts!!!

    kindest regards,andrew

  49. Jelle says:

There are some people here who tried to hit the ‘remove’ button, but none of the passwords were removed. Here is the Windows XP Pro solution (it might also work on XP Home, not sure about that)

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\****\Application Data\Microsoft\Credentials (**** = the name of the administrator, or the username which you want to delete the .NET/MSN passwords from)

And delete the Credentials folder. After you delete this directory, reboot your computer, and away they are.

This will NOT delete windows (log-in)passwords, only the .NET/MSN passwords.

If you do not want to do this every time after you logged in on msn for example. Go to

    –> start
    –> control panel
    –> performance and maintenance
    –> administrative tools
    –> local security policy
    –> local policy
    –> security options

In the list to your right, find the Network Acces: Do not allow storage of credentials or .NET passports for network authentication

Rightclick it, go to the options/settings of it. and click enable.
Now Windows will not store your .NET/MSN passwords again.

I don’t have the english version of Windows, but someone with the english version helped me with it. So things might be named slightly different, but i gues it won’t be hard to find.

    Good Luck

  50. sniptools says:
