If enabled, Word’s “Click And Type” feature allows you to begin typing anywhere on a blank page.

Word’s Click And Type feature allows you to begin typing anywhere on a blank page. You must first enable this feature before you can use it.

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to Tools | Options.
  2. On the Edit tab, select the Enable Click And Type check box in the Click And Type section, and click OK.
  3. To use this feature, switch to Print Layout view, and double-click anywhere on the blank page. For example, suppose you want to type a title in the middle of the first page. In Print Layout view, double-click the middle of the page where you want the title to appear, and type the title. Word automatically center-aligns the title.
  4. You can also use the Click And Type feature to insert nontext items. For example, to place a clip art picture in the bottom right corner of your page, go to the Print Layout view, double-click where you want the picture to appear, and insert the picture. Word automatically right-aligns the picture at the bottom of the page.

That’s all there is to it!

    Totally insane.

It’s the kind of feature that makes all those terribly formated word documents even worse. Microsofft seems to realize that it has failed to vonvey to it’s users what Styles are for, and since they still insist on manually formatting their documents, MS decides to make it easier to create badly formated documents.

What happnes if you do that double-click in the middle of a page is that it adds enough blank lines and indentation so your cursor will sit right about where you clicked. It’s quick and dirty, and dirty is what your documents will be. Yrch!

    Couldn’t agree more :)
The above is just a tip/trick that I find quite handy now. Getting rid of extra tabs and positioning nits is quite easy with a macro, which I invoke automatically upon saving the document.
