So you have Office XP, but cannot get it to update from Microsoft’s Office Update website? Here are some ways to patching MS Office in such a way that it accepts all currently released updates as well.

SECTION A. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE SERVICE PACK 1 INSTALLED

Important: Before you move on with this step, check the version of your MS Office. To do this, open MS Word for example and then, HELP | About Microsoft Word. If the version number includes “SP-1” at the end, then follow with these steps, otherwise, first install SP-1 first, as detailed in Section B below, and then come back to this section to upgrade to SP-2.

Assuming you have SP-1 already, follow these steps:

  1. STEP 1 - Create an Administrative Installation Point

    • To create an Administrative Installation Point, Office XP CD 1 is required. Insert your Office XP CD 1 into the CD-ROM drive.
    • From a Command Prompt, or in the START —> RUN dialog box, type the following and click OK (or hit the Enter key).
      x:\setup.exe /a
Where X represents the letter of the CD-ROM drive:
    • The Office XP Administrative Setup will run, and the Administrative Installation window will appear. Type in your detals — company name, and product key — etc. Leave the install location, c:\Office\ as it is:

Office Administrative Setup looks like this

After entering the information, click Next, and allow the installation to complete. It will take several minutes for the entire contents of CD 1 are extracted into the c:\Office\ folder.

  2. STEP 2 - Download Service Pack 2

Download the file Oxpsp2a.exe. Alternatively, visit this page.

  3. STEP 3 - Extract Service Pack 2 Administrative Update

Type c:\Office\ as the destination path to extract. Click OK. Shown below:

    Extracting the Office Administrative update

  4. STEP 4 - Update the Administrative Installation Point

The folder c:\Office\ now contains the Administrative Installation Point and the Service Pack 2 Administrative Patch files.

We now need to integrate these Service Pack 2 Administrative Patch files into the “Administrative Installation Point.”

NOTE: STEP 4 updates the files in the Administrative Installation Point only. The currently installed Office XP will not be updated until STEP 5.

    • Select and copy the following text:

    • Open the Run Dialog from the START Menu, or open a Command Prompt and paste the above text, and press Enter (to run the command).

The Office XP Setup window will appear. The Administrative Installation Point will take several minutes to update.

    • To update the Administrative Install Point’s Office Web Components, select and copy this additional text:

    • Open the Run Dialog from the START Menu, or open a Command Prompt and paste the above text, and press Enter (to run the command).

The Office Web Components setup window will appear, and the Administrative Installation Point will automatically be updated. This will take a minute or two.

    • The Administrative Install Point is now updated with an integrated SP 2. To verify that the Installation Point has been updated, open thec:\Office\ folder and confirm the size and modification data of The files PROPLUS.MSI and OWC10.MSI should display the day on which they were updated with Service Pack. E.g.,

      Successfully integrated administration point

  5. STEP 5 - Perform Detect & Repair from within the Administrative Installation Point

The folder c:\Office\ now contains the Administrative Installation Point and the Service Pack 2 Administrative Patch files.

This step will update the currently installed Office XP to Service Pack 2.

    • Select and copy the following text:

    • Open the Run Dialog from the START Menu, or open a Command Prompt, and run the above command.

The Office XP Setup window will appear. Setup will now scan the computer and update all Office XP files to Service Pack 2. This will take several minutes.

    • To update the Office Web Components, select and copy the following text:

    • Open the Run Dialog from the START menu, or open a Command Prompt, and run the above command.

The Office XP Setup window will appear. Setup will now scan the computer and update all Office Web Components to Service Pack 2. This will take a few minutes.

    • To verify if Service Pack 2 is installed, Open Microsoft Word (or any other Office Application) and from the HELP menu, select About Microsoft Word. The top line of the window should read as:
      Microsoft Word 2002 (10.4219.4219) SP-2

Microsoft Word is now updated to Service Pack 2

Congratulations! Office XP has now been updated to Service Pack 2!

IMPORTANT NOTE! —
The folder c:\office should not be deleted! It will be required for any future Office Setup or Detect & Repair operations in the future!

SECTION B. IF YOU DON’T HAVE SERVICE PACK 1 INSTALLED, FIRST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW, THEN FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE

(note: After applying this update fix, the MS Office Update website may incorrectly show the update as not installed. The best way to get Office Update to recognize SP1 is to then download and install SP1 through the Office Update website. After the download is complete it will install in only a few seconds. Office Update will now recognize that SP1 has been installed, and will allow the installation of newer patches.)

SUMMARY

This article provides an alternative method of updating Office XP when the typical Office Update methods fail, resulting in the following error:

Error 1328.

This alternative method only works with the Enterprise/Corporate edition of Office XP.

The user may have either used the Office Update Website or downloaded the oxpsp1.exe file to the local computer. Both methods will report the same error.

A typical error message when attempting to update to Service Pack 1 is:

Product: Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage — Error 1328. Error applying patch to file c:\Config.Msi\PT190.tmp. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor. System Error: -1072807676 For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

This error has been found to occur when the following software are installed:

  •  Windows XP Pro Corporate and Office XP Pro with FrontPage
  •  English version of Office and windows

The error may also occur with other flavours of Windows, Windows XP and Office XP.

Additionally, the user will find that the troubleshooting procedures outlined in the article OFFXP: Office Stops During Setup: Troubleshooting Steps on Windows XP (Q309191) will not resolve the problem. Microsoft recommended procedures, such as scanning the disk for errors, installing in safe mode, or running a "flatfile" installation, will not be successful.

DISCLAIMER

This method of updating Office XP has been tested and shown to work. However, Sniptools.com can make no warranty about the effectiveness of this workaround. You follow these instructions at your OWN RISK.

RESolUTION

The following procedure is based on two articles from Microsoft’s website:

Office Resource Kit: Service Pack 1
Office Resource Kit: Creating and Administrative Installation Point

Anyway, let’s get down to it:

STEP 1 - Create an Administrative Installation Point

To create an Administrative Installation Point, Office XP CD 1 is required.

  • Insert Office XP CD 1 into the CD-ROM drive.
  • From a Command Prompt or from the Run Dialog type the following and click OK (or hit the Enter key). See example 1
  • Where X represents the letter of the CD-ROM drive:

    x:\setup.exe /a

    • Office XP Administrative Setup will run, and the Administrative Installation window will appear. Type in your company name, and product key.
Leave the install location, c:\Office\ as it is. see example 2

After entering the information, click Next, and allow the installation to complete. It will take several minutes for the entire contents of CD 1 are extracted into the c:\Office\ folder.

STEP 2 - Download Service Pack 1 Administrative Update

Download the file Oxpsp1a.exe. Alternatively, visit this page.

STEP 3 - Extract Service Pack 1 Administrative Update

Type c:\Office\ as the destination path to extract. Click OK. Shown below:

STEP 4 - Update the Administrative Installation Point

The folder c:\Office\ now contains the Administrative Installation Point and the Service Pack 1 Administrative Patch files.

This step causes the Service Pack 1 Administrative Patch files to be integrated into the Administrative Installation Point.

NOTE: STEP 4 updates the files in the Administrative Installation Point only. The currently installed Office XP will not be updated until STEP 5.

Follow this procedure:

  1. Select and copy the following text:

  1. Open the Run Dialog from the Start Menu, or open a Command Prompt.
  2. Paste the text (right-click and select paste) into the filename area of the Run Dialog, and click OK or press Enter.

The Office XP Setup window will appear. The Administrative Installation Point will take several minutes to update.
  3. To update the Administrative Install Point’s Office Web Components, select and copy this additional text:

  1. Open the Run Dialog from the Start Menu, or open a Command Prompt.
  2. Paste the text (right-click and select paste) into the filename area of the Run Dialog, and click OK or press Enter.

The Office Web Components setup window will appear, and the Administrative Installation Point will automatically be updated. This will take a minute or two.
  3. The Administrative Install Point is now updated with an integrated SP 1. To verify that the Installation Point has been updated, follow these steps:
    1. Using Windows Explorer, open the c:\Office\ folder.
    2. Under the View menu, select Details. This will show the size and modification date of each file in the folder.
    3. The files PROPLUS.MSI and OWC10.MSI should display the day on which they were updated with Service Pack 1.

STEP 5 - Perform Detect & Repair from within the Administrative Installation Point

This step will update the currently installed Office XP to Service Pack 1.

To update the currently installed Office XP to Service Pack 1, perform the following steps:

  1. Select and copy the following text:
  2. Open the Run Dialog from the Start Menu, or open a Command Prompt.
  3. Paste the text (right-click and select paste) into the filename area of the Run Dialog, and click OK or press Enter.

The Office XP Setup window will appear. Setup will now scan the computer and update all Office XP files to Service Pack 1. This will take several minutes.
  4. To update the Office Web Components, select and copy the following text:

  5. Open the Run Dialog from the Start Menu, or open a Command Prompt.
  6. Paste the text (right-click and select paste) into the filename area of the Run Dialog, and click OK or press Enter.

The Office XP Setup window will appear. Setup will now scan the computer and update all Office Web Components to Service Pack 1. This will take a few minutes.
  7. To verify if Service Pack 1 is installed follow these steps:
    1. Open Microsoft Word (or any other Office Application).
    2. From the Help menu, select About Microsoft Word.
    3. The top line of the window should read as:
      Microsoft Word 2002 (10.3416.3501) SP-1

Office XP has now been updated to Service Pack 1.

The folder c:\office should not be deleted. The folder c:\office will be required for any future Office Setup or Detect & Repair operation.

I’m interested in seeing how to do it too but I must warn users not to install SP-3. It is a very buggy update. Read up on MS website.

^7 Lance said on March 26, 2004 7:57 AM:

I was able to install the SP 3 update, by dumping out the administrative file “OfficeXpSp3-kb832671-fullfile-enu.exe” when that dumps out to a folder of your choosing there is an ini file in there, change the section in that file that indicates if it’s an administrative install. The section IsNormalUpdate=0 it defaults to a 1, then run the ohotfix.exe and tell it where your administrative install point is (or you can tell it where it’s at in the ini file) You can get a list of the command line options for dumping out that file but the option you are going to want is the /c. Worked like a charm for me.

Thanks a bunch Lance. Can you provide slightly more detailed instructions?

1. Download SP3 for office http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/5/7/25750DD8-E66E-4099-95B4-216C0542D2F1/officexp-kb833858-fullfile-enu.exe
2. Extract SP3, start run browse to folder you downloaded sp3 double click on officexp-kb833858-fullfile-enu.exe
3. You should be back at the run window, right after the .exe hit a space then /c example c:\download\officexp-kb833858-fullfile-enu.exe /c
4. You should get a license agreement window then a window asking where do you want to put the files
5. Once the files are extracted browse out to the folder sp3 was extracted and open up ohotfix.ini and edit it. Change the IsNormalUpdate=1 to IsNormalUpdate=0 this indicates that it’s and administrative update.
6. You can change the AdminPath= to point to your admin share point or leave it blank, if you leave it blank you will get prompted for the files you want to update.
7. What I did was this AdminPath=\server\share\office\pro.msi
8. Save and close the file
9. Double click on ohotfix.exe it will begin updating Office XP to SP3
10. You are not done yet now you must update the Office Web Components to SP3 go back into that ohotfix.ini file and change the AdminPath=
11. Here is what I did AdminPath=\server\share\office\owc10.msi
12. Save and close the file, run ohotfix.exe, now you will see that it says updating office web components.
13. Important you must update both PRO.MSI and OWC10.MSI

I forgot to add the part where you update the clients, what I did was just create to .bat files run1st.bat and run2nd.bat and put the following line in the run1st.bat “start msiexec /i \server\share\Office\PRO.MSI REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomu” just remove the “” from the line. Then in the run2nd.bat I put “start msiexec /i \server\share\Office\OWC10.MSI REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomu” remove the “” from that one as well. I hope this helps out anyone that has questions.

Hi,

found this really useful and I am upto sp2. I need to install critical updates for Outlook 2002 sp2.
Outlook crashes and Microsoft suggests I install the critical updates, I tried this and the auto update picks up that office is set as an administrator, how can I download and update?

Nic

^12 Nic said on June 5, 2004 1:25 AM:

I found that you donot have to create a second admin point or do you have to type a product key at any time.

Create x:\setup.exe /a with office disc press enter at product key then install sp1 - you can install sp2 over sp1 without doing another /a

Has anyone notice that.

My earlier question was resolved by signing in as administrator then visiting the Microsoft web site.
