Google Base

Turns out all the rumors about Google Base - a mega hosting service, where you can put up anything you wish to be searchable online - has launched.

Well, ok, at least the login screen is intact. I can only reach it sporadically - Google seems to be going through ups and downs in deciding whether to let the dogs out just yet. There are some screenshots available here on Wouter Schut’s German website, but below is a quote that represents a gist of what Google Base envisions:

Post your items on Google.

Google Base is Google’s database into which you can add all types of content. We’ll host your content and make it searchable online for free.

Examples of items you can find in Google Base:

• Description of your party planning service
• Articles on current events from your website
• Listing of your used car for sale
• Database of protein structures

You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.”

This sounds quite interesting. I hope they will allow hosting videos and songs, like PutFile.com, which will have all sorts of ramifications if it were indeed the case. But this is bigger than that. Google was dabbling in payment mechanisms just a short while ago. Now this classifieds-type listing service will be a fascinating new service, drowing out perhaps localized ones like Craig’s List given Google’s reach. Can’t wait to give it a spin.
